Constance, the first Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat
Constance, the first Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat

2012 is the 150th Anniversary year of RNLI lifeboats at Tynemouth.

The inauguration took place on November 13th, 1862 in front of a large crowd. We'll be holding a number of events to mark the anniversary later in the year and the station is to receive a Vellum from the RNLI Trustees in recognition of the 150th anniversary .

It's important to remember that the Tyne was the first place in the world where purpose-built sea-going lifeboats were used, with the launch of Original in 1790. The Tyne Humane Society was the first private voluntary lifesaving organisation in the world and the forerunner of the Shipwreck Society, now the RNLI, that carries on that great tradition of volunteers saving lives at sea, which all started on our river.
